Bio

As a member of the Opetchesaht tribe of the Nuu-chah-nulth nations, Ron Hamilton has been given many names. Many of the prints in the University of Victoria's art collection are signed Hupquatchewi. He was born on the Ahaswinis Reserve near Port Alberni in 1948 where he still lives. In his early years as an artist he apprenticed under renowned carver Henry Hunt as well as participated in a four-year collaboration with Haida artist Francis Williams in Victoria. He worked at the Provincial Museum carving in wood, argillite, silver and ivory. While there he began silk-screening two-dimensional designs. In 1974 he returned to Ahaswinis and began working with his people. His interests extend beyond the plastic ad pictorial arts to singing and dancing and he acts as a cultural advisor and teacher for the West Coast people.
As a carver, graphic artist and painter he has made a vital contribution to the preservation and the continuation of Nuu-chah-nulth art and design. He particularly likes to work with young people and encourages them to become involved in their artistic traditions so that the vitality of their culture can be continued.

Artist Information - As an artist Ron Hamilton has gone by many names. In the past he has signed his work using a variety of names including 'Hupquatchew', 'Kwatsayalpath' or a monogram of an M with a line through it and a small dot on either side. Currently (August 2017) his Indigenous name is Haa'yuups "10 times a chief"
