Artist Fred Amess was born near London, England in 1909 and moved to England in 1913. He studied at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts from 1925 to 1929, joining the faculty in 1931. He was principal of the school from 1952 to 1970. Amess was an advocate of the Art in Living group, and exhibited at such institutions as the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Bau-Xi Gallery.
