Artist Detail - v3

Tla-o-qui-aht, Nuučaan̓uł; Canadian
Joe David was born in 1946 in the village of Opitsaht in Clayoquot Sound on West Coast of Vancouver Island. He spent the first 12 years of his life from the years 1946 to the late fifties involved with the art and culture of the west coast people along with his family.

Joe, on his own, at every opportunity has spent much time in museums studying and photographing old carving and paintings from all of the northwest coast tribes but in particular those from the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is the artist's intention to illustrate with these prints that the art of his people is growing and changing as it always has in the past, marking in history the presence and contribution of an artist and historian to the traditions of his peoples.*

Born in 1946 in the village of Opitsaht in Clayoquot Sound on West Coast of Vancouver Island, Joe David is a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth people. He spent the first 12 years of his life deeply involved with the art and culture of the west coast people along with his family. He drew his first inspiration from traditional cultural heritage passed on by his father, Hyacinth David Sr, and later developed his formative style in Northwest Coast Native Art along with Duane Pascoe and Bill Holm in Seattle.
As a sensitive artist very much in touch with himself and his heritage, carving and painting came naturally to him. It is a strong intention in his work to illustrate that the art of his people is growing and changing as it always has in the past, marking in history the presence and contribution of an artist and historian to the traditions of his peoples.
Major highlights in his career as an artist include helping Bill Reid in the carving of an entrance pole for the new big-house in Skidegate, as well as participating in the British Columbia Pavilion at Expo 74 in Seattle where he carved a 25 ft. totem pole, raised in traditional ceremony and presented to the city of Spokane.
