Judas Ullulaq was born in 1937 in a town called Thom Bay, Nunavut. During his childhood he would spend a lot of time around Inuit doll makers and would help with sewing the dolls, which is where his interest in creating figures began. He eventually moved to Fort Ross, where he would spend the rest of his childhood and early adulthood. After that he moved on to Taloyoak in the late 1960s so that his children could attend school. His older brothers Charlie Ugyuk and Nelson Takkiruq are sculptor’s as well, and Ullulaq drew inspiration from them when creating many of his challenging sculptures. His work is known for its expressive faces with inlaid eyes, flared nostrils, or gaping mouths, showing strong expressions and emotional presence. His work has been shown in over 90 solo and group exhibitions.
