Born in Vancouver, in 1923, Don Jarvis studied at the Vancouver School of Art and graduated with honours in 1948. Over the next year, Jarvis studied on scholarship with Hans Hofmann in New York. He then returned to Vancouver to become well-known for his powerful colourscapes of luminescent, mysterious figures and the British Columbia rainforest. Jarvis began teaching at the Vancouver School of Art in 1951. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1967. In 1986 he retired from his position as Instructor of Painting at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver. Jarvis' works are in many private and corporate collections across Canada. A partial list of his public collections include the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Department of External Affairs, CBC, and Beaverbrook Art Gallery. His extensive exhibition list includes solo exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Edmonton Art Gallery, and Simon Fraser University Gallery. The Bau-Xi Gallery has represented Don Jarvis since 1968. Don Jarvis died of heart disease on March 22, 2001 but his influence in the art community lives on through his paintings and his many years of teaching art.
