Eric Metcalfe was born in Vancouver in 1940 and spend his formative years in Victoria, British Columbia. Art, dance, and music were important to early influences and came to intersect in many original and creative ways with his earliest artistic endeavours of the 1960s. He studied with Jan Zak and then the faculty of the University of Victoria Fine Arts Department. Metcalfe is well known for his establishment of the Western Front in Vancouver in 1973 which stimulated and attracted many of the artists of the day. New ground was broken in the world of performance and conceptual art. Eric Metcalfe, a.k.a. Dr. Brute for a period, continues to exhibit and lecture internationally wide to acclaim. In 2008 Eric Metcalfe was awarded the Governor General's Award for Achievement in the Visual Arts.
