Bio
Born in 1948, John Goodwin is a member of the Makah Nation of Neah Bay Washington, close relatives to the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Vancouver Island.
Since the mid 1970's, after an eighteen month military tour in Vietnam, Goodwin has been actively pursuing his art career in a variety of media. He has always been incredibly involved in the cultural and tradition of his people and by utilizing his artistic abilities he realized he could contribute to his culture. He began by painting dancing robes and creating and painting bentwood cedar boxes. Wanting to learn more about the different media in West Coast Native Art, he apprenticed under Loren White, a master carver and engraver. Goodwin also apprenticed under Art Thompson, began pulling his own limited edition prints and started signing this work with his adult Native name, Ny-tom. With the help of his family, Goodwin also started a printing company and sold printed fabric in Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.
John Goodwin currently lives in Sequim, WA, and continues to work with and explore mediums that lend themselves to native art and design.
