Virginia Lewis studied painting with “Group of Seven” artist Arthur Lismer in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art and Design in the 1920s and later with artist A.C. Leighton in Calgary. She became a student of artist Jan Zach in the early 1950s when he taught in Victoria, BC. He described her as one of his “very serious students and extremely gifted”. Her studio was the former studio of 19th century pioneer photographer Hannah Maynard.

Virginia first exhibited in the 1950s with fellow students of Jan Zach, some of whom formed a group which repeatedly exhibited at “The Point” – the Don Adams Gallery which was the local hot-spot for modern furniture and art. There she held her first solo show in 1960. A year later “The Point Group” was shown at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV). Throughout the 1960s Virginia exhibited in numerous Jury shows at the Victoria and Vancouver Art Galleries – receiving at least two honorable mentions. In 1964 she held her first solo show at the AGGV.

She travelled extensively to study contemporary art and painted well into her 80s.
