A circular mandala is impressed in relief upon black paper. Rings drawn in graphite occur intermittently. There is a small heart shape located in the center of the work.
Bates is deepley interested in Buddhism, Sufism, and the 13th century Persian poet Rumi. This mandala can be seen as a gesture of gratitude and respect for Rumi. According to Alma de Chantal, the colour black "does not represent darkness". "On the contrary, it symbolizes rather a passageway opening on light, wisdom, knowledge."
