Mask, Carving
circa 1992
carved and painted birch with human hair, suede, fur and feathers
hair: 30 cm; overall: 21.50 cm x 16.50 cm x 12.00 cm; suede straps: 48 cm
Carved wood mask with human-like features. The mask’s eyes are open wide so that the entire iris is visible. The figure has a small smile as well as a labret in their lower lip. The base is stained green which allows the grain of the wood to show through. The exterior nostrils, lips and labret are painted red while the figure’s teeth are an off-white. Their eyes and the areas surrounding them have abstract diagonal shapes painted over them in red and turquoise. Black and red formline designs, possibly depicting a salmon or whale, flow across their cheeks, temples, and forehead. Hair is attached to the top of the mask. There are two holes drilled in the sides of the mask with turquoise suede straps, likely used to tie the mask in place. The suede straps are adorned with white rabbit fur and brown and tan feathers.
