Rattle
1990
Wood, acrylic paint
overall: 10 cm x 12 cm x 34 cm
A carved wooden rattle rendered in Kwakwaka’wakw style consisting of many interlocking animal and human forms. The main form is a raven, painted in red and black. The head of the raven makes up the top of the rattle while the tail acts as the handle. On the raven’s back is a human figure, dressed or painted in red, lying in a supine position. Atop the human’s belly is a green frog with its tongue extended to touch the human’s mouth. A kingfisher’s head pokes up from behind the frog and captures the rear of the frog with its beak. The belly of the raven consists of two faces that share the same teeth-baring mouth. The nose of the larger face protrudes out from the relief.
