Description
A crowned Avalokiteshvara sits in full lotus pose with hands in a mudra, and the left hand holding a rope. The figure wears earrings and two necklaces. The soles of both feet are tattooed, along with several other places on the legs and arms. In the center of the crown on Avalokiteshvara's head sits the small Buddha Amitabha, who is revered as one of the five "self-born" Buddhas that have existed eternally. The figure is male, not female despite its "cuvry" figure.
Artist Statement
Curatorial Description
Avalokiteshvara is a Bodhisattva, an enlightened being who represents
compassion and mercy. Once gilded and painted, this figure would have
been housed as part of a temple altar. Before the figure was consecrated,
a spiritual teacher would fill the hollow body with rolled mantras and
other sacred items. In the centre of Avalokiteshvara’s crown sits the small
Buddha Amitabha - revered as one of the five “self-born” Buddhas that
have existed eternally.
