Rectangular cotton drapery fragment 'tulip' pattern. Large intertwining leaves form large part of pattern setting for horizontal rows of alternating tulips in bloom. Colour 3 shades of blue. Block printed for Morris by Thomas Wardle, Leek. A preliminary design and the original printing blocks of this textile are now in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow. (see Earthly Paradise, p. 158-9) The Queen Square selvedge mark suggests that this sample was one of the first of Morris' own designs printed under the name of Morris and Co. which was registered on March 25, 1875.
