woven tray
before 2004
cedar root, cherry bark, dye
overall: 12 cm x 34.5 cm x 4 cm
Rectangular woven tray made from dried cedar and possibly cherry bark. The materials, shapes, colours, and techniques suggest the tray is Sto:lo-made. The tray features a series of checkered patterns achieved by dying strips of bark in red and black. A 3x3 black checkered square appears below the left handle, with an identical 3x3 red checkered square appearing below the right handle. Similar checkered squares appear throughout the outer walls of the tray, spaced a few inches apart and alternating between red and black. In the middle of the tray’s surface is a large black diamond with a smaller, red diamond in the center. Four smaller, red diamonds frame the larger black diamond in the center (two above and two below). There are visible signs of aging and loss throughout the piece and along the outer edges of the tray walls. The cedar coils where the handles attach are dyed red.
