Description
Hanging scroll, silk mounting. Painting on silk with opaque colours and some ink outline. This is a portrait of a Buddhist monk of the Shingon Sect, tentatively identified as Kóbó-daishi(by the vajra held in the right hand), the founder of the sect. He is seated on a dais. His shoes are depicted in front and an ewer is to the right. (from Kelsall, Joanne, et al. Oriental Scroll Paintings from the Maltwood Collection. Victoria: University of Victoria, 1983).
