This 200$ gold coin designed by Robert Davidson is 3mm in diameter. The front of the coin depicts a sun-like form inspired by the Haida cultural hero, Raven. In the centre of the coin is a face with human-like features. The face appears to be smiling or grinning. The face is surrounded by traditional form line design including ovoids and U-shapes. The back of the coin features a side profile image of Queen Elizabeth II adorned in a pearl necklace and crown. Encircling the queen and along the outer edge of the coin is the inscription: 200 DOLLARS CANADA 1997 ELIZABETH II. The coin is protected by a round plastic case and sits within a square black velvet jewellery box with a gold rim.
This $200 gold coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1997 as part of its Native Cultures and Traditions series. It is based on a design by Robert Davidson, originally intended for a pendant, called Raven Bringing the Light to the World. It is one of only 25,000 coins produced with this design. This coin builds on the Legacy’s current holding of Pacific Northwest Coast art, including 22 other artworks created by Davidson.
