Artwork Detail - V6

Carved mask
before 1985
Acrylic, cedar, cedar bark
mask only: 31 cm x 19.5 cm x 12.5 cm; overall: 45.5 cm x 24 cm x 12.5 cm
Painted wooden mask representing a burned human face. The carved left side of the mask depicts the figure’s face. The figure’s eyes, eyebrows, and mustache are painted in black, while their lips are filled in with dark red paint. Turquoise paint accents the figure’s forehead, eye socket, nose, and chin. The right half of the mask lacks any carving and paint that form the figure’s facial features. Instead, the surface is smooth and painted completely black. A twisted cedar rope wraps around the left side of the face, starting just right of the mask’s vertical axis and descending to below the figure’s chin. Both ends of the rope are unraveled. The end of the rope bordering the top edge of the mask is painted black, mimicing a burnt cord.
