Artwork Detail - V6

Carving
after 1950
soapstone
overall: 33 cm x 34 cm x 15 cm
This sculpture shows a person and a walrus, somewhat entangled with one another. The sculpture is all one piece, depicting the two figures as separate, but also enmeshed together. The stone is marbled with different shades of grey, and has been sanded to be extremely smooth and polished. The fine details are shown with small, white marks on the dark stone, like the eyes and moustaches of both figures. The rim of the person's parka that sits at their waist, has small notches denoting its end. The hunter's head is turned over his shoulder, away from the walrus, his mouth agape. The hunter has a thin, light brown piece of hide looping through holes in his hands, the hide having once been attached to a hole in the side of the walrus' head, but the hide has since broken.
