Carving
circa 1960-2012
antler, wood, stone, adhesive
antler: 31 cm x 10.5 cm x 4 cm; overall: 34 cm x 10.5 cm x 10.5 cm; stone: 5 cm x 9 cm x 6 cm
This work is made up of two pieces, a brown, speckled rock base with a short, round wooden post in the centre (b), and a piece of antler with a hole in the bottom (a), that fits into the aforementioned round post. When put together the antler stands atop the rock, the rock positioned to balance out the heavier parts of the antler. The antler is imperfectly ovular at the base, becoming a bit more flattened and wide as you go up the sculpture. To the upper-right of the sculpture, one can see where the antler branched out where a wide, flat extension / branch begins but the artist has cut that branch off so now it is flat there. The antler is cream coloured, with some other shades of light brown gently blended in with the smooth texture of the antler. Carved onto the flat side of the antler are two human faces, and one full figured human, they are all stacked on top of each other. The figure is in the middle, between the two faces. They are all hairless, smiling, but have slightly different facial expressions. The top face looks like it has two short horns coming out of their forehead, their eyes are horizontal lines, they have a crooked / asymmetrical nose, and their mouths are in a smirk with the right corner of the mouth is tugged up more than the left. The figure in the middle has eyes that are made of a straight line, where the inner corner is slanted upwards, and the outer corners are turned downwards. Their nose is rectangular, they have ears at the sides of their bald head, and have a symmetrical smile. They are clothed in a full length shirt, and have boots that come up to their knees and cover half of their pants. Their torso is significantly longer than their legs. The bottom face has eyes made of straight lines as well, but in this case the inner corners are slanted down, while the outer corners are turned upwards. Their ears are very small, they are barely visible at the sides of their head, just small bumps. Their nose is rectangular and a small symmetrical smile.
